Bakelite in Yonkers: Pioneering the Age of Plastics
Feb 6 - Jun 6, 2010
Hudson River Museum
511 Warburton Avenue
Yonkers, NY 10701-1899
Every day we come into contact with synthetic materials so familiar to us that life without them would be hard to
imagine. Bakelite in Yonkers is a dynamic exhibition of more than 300 objects that show the development of Bakelite,
a new material vital to an array of twentieth century consumer products - ash trays, toilet seats, door handles,
blocks, bracelets, clocks, dinnerware, flashlights, toasters, kitchen mixers, castanets, and toy cars - to name a
few! Inventor Leo Baekeland invented Bakelite at Snug Rock, his home in Yonkers between 1905 and 1907.

Pioneering and brilliant, he quickly realized the scientific and commercial value of his discovery. First an inexpensive
alternative to precious materials such as ivory, this exhibition traces how Bakelite soon reached the height of
popularity as a key material in Art Deco objects, and was a favorite material of designers from Norman Bel Geddes
and Raymond Loewy to Philippe Starck.
Bakelite in Yonkers: Pioneering the Age of Plastics is organized by Reindert Groot for the Amsterdam Bakelite®
Collection, and Hugh Karraker in partnership with the Hudson River Museum. Bakelite is a registered trade name of Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc., Columbus, Ohio

Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra - Lincoln Center
Feb 17 -19, 2010
Lincoln Center - Avery Fisher Hall
125 East 11th Street
New York, NY 10003
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1918. In the 1930s under chief-conductor Eduard Flipse it developed
into one of the most prominent orchestras of the Netherlands. With Jean Fournet and Edo de Waart the orchestra entered
a new era. It was together with De Waart, who was appointed chief-conductor in 1973, that the orchestra gained international
recognition in numerous recordings and successful tours.

Valery Gergiev's appointment as Music Director in 1995 heralded a new period of bloom. The celebrated Russian conductor made
his debut with the orchestra in 1988. During the years of his leadership, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra has developed
into an orchestra of worldwide reputation. At the start of the 2008-2009 season, Yannick Nézet-Séguin succeeded Valery Gergiev
as Music Director.
Especially notable is the orchestra's opera tradition. It gave the world premiere of Alfred Schnittke's Life with an Idiot,
and participated in acclaimed productions of Pelléas et Mélisande, Parsifal, and Tristan und Isolde. Its concert performance
of Wagner's Parsifal under Rattle, as part of the September 2000 BBC Proms, was hailed a triumph.
One of the ambitions of the Rotterdam Philharmonic is to cultivate new audiences. Therefore special concerts for children
are given; the boundaries between classical, world, and light music are explored in festive prom-concerts; and the world
of classical music is introduced in educational concerts.
In addition to 70 subscription concerts, the Orchestra's schedule each season includes the Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival.
Themed 'Eternal Youth' the 14th edition of this festival will take place from 29 August to 6 September 2009, featuring symphonic
concerts, opera, chamber music, a film series and solo and song recitals.

Robert Steijn - Danspace Project
Apr 15 - Apr 17, 2010
Danspace Project
131 East 10th, St. Mark's Church
New York, NY 10003
In the first-time collaborative duet, Maria Hassabi and Robert Steijn - the well-known Dutch dance critic and theorist who began
making dances in his 40s - say "You dance inside my chest where no one sees you, but sometimes I do, and this sight makes our dance."

Hassabi and Steijn ask themselves "when do outside differences meet inside similarities? When do opposites become the two sides of
one coin?" In his thinking about art, Steijn is "strongly influenced by the mentality of the work of Jack Smith and the formality
and playfulness of the performances of Dan Graham and Matt Mullican. In his belief in the spiritual dimension of theatre he is
influenced by his encounters with the Korean Shaman Hi Ah Park.
